Williams Design Document
Purpose:
This web site will be for my students at FHU. They are juniors and seniors in high school and I teach mathematics. There
will be two main purposes of the web site. One, I will give the students links to videos online that they can use to
reinforce the material they are learning. Last, I will use it to link up premade notesheets for the students to use while
learning new material. This will help the students engage and understand the material better.
Audience:
The target audience for this web site will be for my high school students. My students are upperclassman but also
are in a credit recovery program and need extra support. This web site will be an easy thing for them to access all the
time for extra support while they are learning new concepts in math. Most of my students struggle with math and do not
know where to look for help, especially when I am not right by their side. This web site will be a place for them to start
when they need a little extra support.
Needs Assessment:
Four fellow teachers provided me with feedback on what I should be doing and the direction I should head for this web site.
These four teachers work with the same students that I do so they know above anyone else what they need for resources.
Questions asked to teachers:
What do you think would be most helpful to our students?
- Follow along notesheets for the students to print off and follow while they are doing their work
- Links to videos of the new material
- Links to web sites explaining the material
What do you think will make the site desirable for students?
- Easy to navigate site so they do not get frustrated and not use the site
- Links to a specific class and then a specific lesson
Which class or classes should I focus on the most on this site?
- Everyone said they think algebra 1 classes because that is where they see our students struggling the most
Five reference websites
These five sites are examples of how I wish to (or not wish to) set up my website:
- For a simple layout, my page will look similar to this page. It is not crazy with color and the links are on the side and is a good example of a layout.
- This next webpage is a little bit to straight forward. It to boring to the point where students would be dreading the work before they got to it. This is a bad example of a layout.
- For a good navigation, this website has clear links for students to click and is a good example of navigation
- This next link is a good example of the color scheme.
- This is a web page that I do not like the layout of. It has a lot of information for students but it is too cluttered and distracting for the student to work. This is a non-example layout.
Content
Based on the responses of my colleagues, I have chosen to include the following math classes:
- Algebra 1A (Semesters 1 and 2)
- Algebra 1B (Semesters 1 and 2)
Both of these sections will contain subsections of specific lessons for the students to click on. From there,
there will be subsections of the lessons with links to websites, videos, and notesheets for the students to access.
Presentation of Information/Rationale of Organization:
This website will be set up to use with ease by my high school students. I will have supporting pages for my
for math classes.
To provide a similar look and feel for all pages I will:
- Keep the same banner logo at the top of all pages
- A heading for all the subset of pages that tells the students what topic/page they clicked on. (name will be same as the link they clicked).
- Color coded links so the students know what they should be looking at based on their class
- Every page will have a link to take them back to the homepage
The home page will contain:
- Links to the specific classes
- An info section that tell the students what the web site is for and how to use it
- A layout that will be easy for the students to see what they are doing and looking for
All subsequent pages will have navigation on the left hand side
The following details the content that will be on the subsequent pages:
- The Algebra 1A S1 page will have links to the specific lessons, for example Expressions and Equations and Exponents and Factors.
These will match the names of the lessons in the class so the students know what they are clicking. Within the lesson page, the students will see
links to notesheets that go with the lesson, links to videos that re-explain the lesson, and to webpages that also explain the lesson
- The other pages (Algebra 1A S2, Algebra 1B S1, Algebra 1B S2) will all be set up just as Algebra 1A S1
except with the lessons being from those classes
Media:
The logo that will go across the top of all my pages will be a design I will (try) to make using Photoshop. I do not plan on using
any other images in my website. However, if I decide to use some while I am actually creating the site, I will give credit
to the picture underneath it on the site.
Color Scheme and Rationale:
Since this page is for high school students who are easily distracted, I will be using dark colors for the text that are easily
legible. The text will be black, with maroon links. This maroon will also be in the banner so the page looks cohesive.
I do not want to page to look to busy so the students do not get distracted by the page itself. I will only use a couple
other colors besides maroon. I am thinking light blue and grey. Here are examples of my colors.
